Tiger’s nest (also called as Taktshang Monastery) lies clinging on the cliff at an altitude of 3180m above the sea level. This attraction is popular for religious people and travelers and one of the main highlights of Bhutan trip. It is said that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of the tigress and meditated at this monastery, so that is it called Tiger’s Nest. It is half an hour drive from Paro to the edge of Paro valley (12KM) from where we start hiking to the Tiger’s nest. You start hiking up all the way to alpine forest with several steps and duration of hiking is about two and half hour. The opening time of this attraction is 8am to 1pm and 2 pm to 5 pm daily. If you can’t walk up to the temple, you can also hire a horse but you will have to be careful while using horse to go up because of steep ascent and steps.

It is also the summer residence of Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot. Then, visit National Library which has vast collection of ancient Buddhist text and manuscripts. After that, drive to Arts and Crafts School, famous for traditional Thangkha paintaing, here you will see, students at work producing intricate design on cloth. Then visit to Mermorial Chorten, the stupa built in the memory of Bhutan’s Third King who is popularly regarded as Father of modern Bhutan. The paintings and statues inside this monument provide a deep insight into Buddhist Philosophy.
Later afternoon, drive to Punakha crossing Dochula Pass (3080m). En-route visit Chimi Lhakhag. Overnight at hotel in Punakha
After breakfast, visit Punakha Dzong, built tactically at the junction of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers (Male and Female rivers) in 1637 AD by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to serve as the religious and administrative center of the region. Punakha Dzong has played an important role in Bhutan’s history. Damaged by four catastrophic fires and an earthquake the Dzong has now been fully restored. Then drive to Wangdiphodrang to visit Dzong and local market. The district of Wangdiphodrang is also famous for its bamboo products, slate and stone carvings. After lunch, drive back to Paro with a short stop at Docula Pass. En route visit Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress of the Kindgom built in 1627 AD, it now houses the School for Buddhists studies.

After breakfast, drive to the edge of Paro valley and take an excursion to Taktshang Monastery (Tiger’s nest), one of the most popular Buddhists Monasteries in Bhutan. It is said that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of the tigress and meditated at this monastery, so that is it called Tiger’s Nest. The total excursions to this temple takes about 5 hours and afternoon visit to Ta Dzong, the National Museum of the country and holding fascinating collection of art, artifacts, Thangkha paintings and Bhutan’s exquisite postage stamps. Then walk down the trail to visit Ringpung Dzong which has a long and fascinating history.
